Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but the process doesn’t end once you leave my Manchester studio. Proper tattoo aftercare is one of the most important steps to make sure your new piece of art heals beautifully and lasts for years.
As a tattoo artist, I always remind my clients that looking after your tattoo is just as important as the tattoo session itself. Below, you’ll find a simple aftercare guide that will help you protect your skin and keep your tattoo looking fresh.
Step-by-Step Tattoo Aftercare
1. Remove the dressing
Take off the dressing 2–4 hours after your tattoo session, once you’re in a clean environment where you can wash the area safely.
2. Gently wash your tattoo
Use lukewarm water to clean the tattoo. Carefully remove any leftover ointment, excess ink, or dried blood.
3. Pat dry — don’t rub
Use clean paper towels to pat the skin dry. Avoid using fabric towels, as they may carry bacteria or leave fibres on the tattoo.
4. Repeat during the first 24 hours
Wash and dry your tattoo 3–4 times within the first day to keep the skin fresh.
5. After the first day
Wash your tattoo at least twice a day. Always dry with paper towels and apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream or ointment.
6. Continue for 10–14 days
Repeat this routine for around two weeks, or until your tattoo is fully healed. Everyone heals at a slightly different pace, so don’t worry if it takes a bit longer.
What to Avoid While Healing
• Don’t scratch or pick your tattoo, even if it itches.
• Avoid long baths, swimming pools, and saunas until it’s healed.
• Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds.
• Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattooed area.
Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters?
Taking good care of your tattoo ensures that the colours stay vibrant and the lines remain sharp. Poor aftercare can lead to fading, infections, or patchy healing. By following these simple steps, you’ll give your skin the best chance to recover quickly and beautifully.
*This is an example of the standard healing process for a small / medium tattoo; sometimes, different care methods may be necessary depending on the placement and size. I always take the time to thoroughly explain how to care for a tattoo and am always available for advice :)
If you’re planning to get tattooed in Manchester and want a piece in colour, black and grey, abstract, neotraditional, sketch or watercolour style, feel free to reach out through my enquiry form or social media. I’m currently taking bookings for the coming months.
✨ Looking after your tattoo = looking after your art. Treat it well, and it will stay with you for life.
